The day has finally come for the long awaited premiere of the final chapter of the Twilight series.
I was sure to pre-order my tickets for the late night Thursday premiere in fear that all seats would be sold out. I showed up to the theater a few hours in advance with fellow staff reporter Marki Kaim, ready to report the die hard fans who showed up hours early dressed up as each member of the Cullen clan to put in the newspaper.
However, these “Twi-Hards” did not live up to expectations.
Personally, I live on the other side of the spectrum, being a Potterhead rather than a Twi-Hard.
Yes, the battle of Harry Potter vs. Twilight continues.
After attending the midnight premieres of both parts of the Deathly Hallow movies, I had high expectations for the Breaking Dawn Premiere, thinking that Twilight fans were just as dedicated, if not even more crazed by the series, waiting in line with all their “Team Edward” shirts and vampire fangs.
Instead, we showed up to the theater just to see a line of people wrapped up in blankets and jackets, with no Twilight merchandise in sight. Talk about major let down.
I brought my Harry Potter snuggie along to show which series my heart really stood with, and the comparisons just took off from there.
The first thing that stood out to me was the amount of people waiting to see the movie. At the premiere of the Deathly Hallows Part 2, there were four separate theaters completely sold out for the showing of the move. At the Breaking Dawn premiere, there were only two. That starts the score at Harry Potter: 1 Twilight: 0.
The second thing that stood out before was, as I mentioned before, the fact that no one was dressed up, or had any sort of Twilight memorabilia to support the ending of this greatly loved series.
Of course, both Deathly Hallows premieres featured an array of students and fans dressed up as the characters with house colored ties, wands, Harry inspired glasses and scars, and even a girl dressed up in an exact replica of the dress Hermione wore at the Yule ball in the fourth film. Harry Potter: 2 Twilight: 0.
Now, Twilight fans can try to use the “it’s November, it was really cold outside” excuse, but the first Deathly Hallows movie also premiered in November, and that didn’t stop anyone from showing their dedication.
All in all, I have to admit that the ending of Breaking Dawn Part Two was mind blowing, and I do recommend seeing this movie. But after ten years of following the adventures of Harry Potter, he will always be number one.
