“Sinister,” released Oct. 12, is about a man who discovers films depicting horrible murders. The movie is suspenseful and will stay with audience long after it ends.
For those who are looking to sleep with the light on this Halloween, “Sinister” is the movie to see. Despite the typical horror movie blunders, Sinister produces a sense of fear that viewers just cannot avoid. It was released Oct. 12.
Ellison Oswalt, played by Ethan Hawke, writes about real-life crimes. In an effort to produce a hit novel, he moves his family into a house where four of the previous occupants were hung and the fifth, a young child, went missing.
In such a setting, it is expected that many scares will come from loud noises in suspenseful situations. The accompanying music does a great job of enhancing the horrors.
However, this is not where Sinister draws the line.
“Sinister’s” plot is largely based on Oswalt’s discovery of seemingly innocent films that in reality depict awful murders.
The gruesome videos showing the deaths of several families are genuinely disturbing. This is what separates Sinister from other recent horror movies: these scares stay with you long after the ending credits.
That being said, there are many moments where frightening situations could have been avoided if a character simply turned on a light. Like many horror movies, the predictability of the characters is the movie’s biggest downfall.
Overall, “Sinister’s” superb mix of genuinely disturbing moments and quick, jump-inducing scares is enough to set it apart from other new horror movies. With an ending that will leave viewers stunned, it is truly a must-see for horror fans.
