Triathlon shows health

To create awareness for fitness, health careers teacher Caryn Blanke and counselor Scott Deutsch put together the school’s first indoor triathlon. The triathlon had been in discussion for a while, but they finally decided that the final day of first semester would work well.

More than 50 people participated including teachers, custodians, and students. There were also more than 30 volunteers to help record the distances of the participants.

Participants competed in two ways: relay and individually. In the three person relay, one would swim, one would bike, and one would run. Individuals did all three. Participants completed a 10 minute lap swim, followed by a 5 minute transition, then completed a 20 minute stationary bike workout with the last workout, a 15 minute run.

Alex Sanchez provided music for the event. Junior Christina DiMaria competed in a relay with two other juniors. DiMaria did the stationary bike and said “[she] did it because [she] thought it would be a cool and fun experience.”

Blanke plans on having the event next year on the same day. DiMaria will compete again next year but as an individual.
