An ancient evil lies in wait, dozing in the trees while the harbinger of its creation remains unmoved in the depths of a secluded cabin. What will it take to stir this evil?
Oh, just the prying of 5 twenty-something pals looking for a fun vacation.
We know this evil–director Sam Raimi brought it forth on three occasions. “The Evil Dead” was the first incarnation of this force, which was followed by two other forms: “Evil Dead II” and “Army of Darkness.”
The initial title is a stand-alone, which seems odd, considering it spawned two sequels.
However, the second title is an even-campier remake of the first. In every sense of the word, “Evil Dead II” is a sheer delight. Watching a bloodied man fight his own mischevious hand is now a fond memory of mine (thank you, Sam Raimi).
“Army of Darkness,” however, takes the Campy Cake. Armed with his “boomstick” and grisly chainsaw-arm, protagonist Ash takes viewers on a wild ride through a cursed medieval kingdom.
With all that said and done, however, director Fede Alvarez decided it was time to move on.
The new “Evil Dead” (slated for an April 5 release) has proven through two trailers that it will be a more “mature” version of Raimi’s original “Evil Dead.”
The gore appears to be more epic, and it looks like there will be one or two new scenes unique to this release.
The story, however, appears that it will be largely the same, and stray too much (if at all) from the content of the original.
This movie is going to be fantastic, I’m sure. I’m anxious for a fresh and more mature look at this cult-horror classic.
