IHSA hits pause on winter sports and activities

During its monthly November meeting, the Illinois High School Sports Association (IHSA) paused winter season high school sports and activities until further notice.

As for future events such as camps and practices, they remain up in the air and depend on what school officials hear from the state agencies .

Elk Grove High School assistant principal for athletics and activities Jackie Randall said her job has changed greatly with no physical events going on at EGHS as a result of this pause.

“During the day, I am focusing my time on facility improvements in the weight room, main gym, stadium, and pool,” Randall said in an email.

Randall said the always-busy athletics and activities office has spent a lot of their days altering schedules and updating protocols for this year and while planning for 2021.

Sophomore football and basketball athlete Owen Davenport said he misses the team building aspects of sports more than anything.

“I just miss being around my friends and being able to compete,” Davenport said via email.

With sports still up in the air for the spring, Randall said she hopes we will hear more soon from the IHSA, Illinois Department of Public Health and the Governor’s office.

Randall said we should get another update when the IHSA meets again Dec. 14.
