Boys and men go through two stages in life: their mothers dressing them and their wives dressing them. Everyone can agree that women tend to have a better sense of what looks presentable. Unfortunately for you boys, it is a woman’s world and you’re just a pawn who is at their disposal.
I am completely biased, but I can agree to the fact that some boys do have a natural sense of style. I have had the pleasure of meeting some incredibly dressed young men, but I’ve also met some that don’t know what jeans are. Both are incredible in their own way, but I prefer the properly dressed kind. I think they take great pride in their appearance and I admire them for that.
You can spot these stylish guys from down the hallway to down the street. The ones I have met have a different approach to life. They’re not afraid of what others think and pride themselves in who they are. Those are the kind of men who can earn respect from others.
Women have this preconception of what men should wear on a day-to-day basis. This, of course, is because of media, fashion outlets, and romance novels.
I blame Europe. Their idea of men’s fashion is far beyond what Americans perceive to be “cool.” Teenage girls and even women fall head over heels for British wonderboys. I know a lot of girls don’t exactly like this new boy band ( ex: One Direction) but it can’t be ignored that they have a good sense of what looks good.
I am one of those girls who is obsessed with clothes and what looks good (if it wasn’t obvious already.) Although I have been going in-depth with what girls would like to know, I also have some biased advice for all the boys out there.
This is my view on what I think boys should consider when it comes to their wardrobe. Now, boys who are reading this may not agree with me but I think I can speak for a good chunk of the girl population when I say this– we do care what you wear.
I’m not saying that all boys should go and buy new clothes but since I am a girl, heed my advice. Yes, girls will like you no matter what you wear, but it does help if you take pride in how you look. As I’ve said to the girls, appearance is the first thing that the opposite sex sees and most likely makes their assumptions from there.
This goes both ways, of course.
I don’t want this to be about finding a date or getting a girlfriend because at the end of the day that girl will like you for being you. This recreation is for the British debonair that is seeking its way out. This is for change. I mean, we nearly escaped our doom and have made it into 2013 so why not make it count?
I love taking chances whether good or bad. Boys are not as open minded as they could be when it comes to fashion. Don’t worry, you guys won’t have to know what Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, or Valentino are. All you boys need to know is what type of clothes you like. Pick something that flatters you and that you feel comfortable wearing.
My biggest advice is to take a trusted female companion along for the ride. She will know what looks best and what should be left on the hanger. Hopefully she can give you some constructive criticism. Don’t doubt her for any reason. Most likely she is telling you what she would like to see in her ” ideal man.”
I’ve met enough boys in my 18 years of life to somewhat understand their thinking when it comes to putting together an “outfit.” First off, they’re lazy. That’s plain and simple. No offense guys, but sometimes your world could use a little feminine touch. Others may just be confused as to what would make them look good. This is perfectly normal for a boy and sometimes even girls.
Oh yeah, and don’t forget to have fun. Think of this as an adventure and take the bull by the horns. Don’t be afraid because even if you are everyone has been there a time or two.
I know no one asked, but I’m going to tell you what I would like to see on a guy. A nice pair of jeans or khakis, some patterned sweaters or a dress shirt or even T-shirts. I think shoes are my favorite thing to pick out for boys. Sperry’s are the best for a casual look.
Trust me, when that girl who has been watching you ever so diligently compliments you on your carefully chosen outfit, you’ll wonder what ever took you so long to make a change. Remember that feeling the next time you go shopping.
