New season shrouded in mystery

‘American Horror Story’ entices viewers with secrecy

The theme of “American Horror Story“ season six was a mystery to us all. Hundreds of conspiracy theories were posted on social media. The producers released multiple teasers for the new season, but almost all of them were fake.

This season was meant to be kept secret until the show officially premiered. To the producers’ happiness, the first episode shocked everyone.

Unlike past “AHS” seasons, the theme and cast were kept confidential. No spoilers or hints were given out, keeping all fans in the dark, but the first episode of the season revealed the title, “American Horror Story: Roanoke.”

Even with this theme revealed at the start, the producers had many secrets to reveal.

The show starts out mirroring a reality TV show possibly from the Chiller channel. The actors played characters explaining their terrifying encounter with ghosts of Roanoke villagers.

Season six for any show may not get the best ratings, but AHS excelled with this season. With the usual excitement for new characters, “Roanoke” even tied in elements from previous seasons, proving the theory that all the stories from each season are connected. The last few episodes brought back a character from season two.

Overall, I believe season six  accomplished almost everything it tried to accomplish. The first half was like a reality show, but an unexpected twist occurred in the middle of the season. It flipped from a reality show to a behind-the-scenes show, revealing the producers and cameramen.

Every episode was enticing between the guts, gore, horror and the switching plot lines. It’s a big risk to change the show completely halfway through the season, but “AHS” succeeded in thrilling the viewers. Some things could have been written or filmed in better ways though. The last few episodes of season six were mainly around the Polk family, an enemy family located next to the main location of where the show is set.

At first it was exciting and exhilarating, but after one episode it got tedious and unnerving. In one scene a character was even shown being gnawed on by a Polk family member.

Visual effects were brilliant throughout the series however. The amount of blood and open wounds in every episode is insane but thrilling. After the flip in the middle of the season, the main producers get their stomachs slashed open and are shown lying dead on the ground.

Keeping the past seasons in mind, I believe season six topped almost all. With the plot, effects and twists, season six managed to entice all audiences.
