Fishing reels in big check

One of the newest sports at EG has just received an upgrade. Though the bass fishing team is relatively new, only surfacing in the last few years, new equipment has allowed them to make strides.

On Saturday, September 9, the team visited Waukegan Harbor and Marina to help staff a fishing tournament for kids. They arrived around 6:30 a.m. to help gather equipment and supplies, and didn’t finish until 1:30 p.m. when the participating team members were given a check for $2,000.

The Great Lakes based fishing club, Salmon Unlimited, presented the check to the team for their work at the tournament and to enhance their practices. The goal of Salmon Unlimited is to protect fishing in the area frequently give donations of money and equipment.

“The hope is to use the boat to be able to practice more,” coach Matt Snow said. “Right now, we’re very dependant on schedules and we only practice every couple weeks.”

Snow hopes to use the funds to purchase a school fishing boat, something the team needs to be able to adequately match the experience of other fishing teams.

As it stands, the team primarily fishes in the Salt Creek in Busse Woods and has only had a few practices this year due to the difficulty of reaching a good location to practice.
