Chess returns for 5th year

Elk Grove High School’s chess team is in its 5th year coached by science teacher Peter Wang. He says that because of how young the team is, their main goals are to “gain experience, have fun, and compete well.” Competitions last from October through February.

The team consists of 14 students of mixed years in school. Wang makes note of returning sophomores Brian Rosca and Tomoko Sakurayama, saying that they are currently leading the way. The team competes against other conference teams and in the IHSA chess state tournament in February.

All students (including beginners) are still able to join the team by emailing Peter Wang directly. The team meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school in room 216. Wang especially wants students to know that the team has a lot of fun during their frequent competitions.
