Ledger vs. Leto

Elise Stornello and Grace Cloherty

Elise: Heath Ledger is the best Joker. His deranged psychopathic personality makes the audience love and hate him at the same time. Ledger proves his character’s depth with iconic lines and a terrifying grin. In one of the Batman movies, Ledger completely improvises when a stunt bomb fails to explode. With best response in the movie, Ledger fidgets with the remote until the explosion occurs.

Grace: Sure, but Leto upstages him in other categories, such as bringing a fresh start for DC Comics. This opens up a plethora of money making opportunities, especially by adding a new laugh. The squeaky “ha ha ha” creates an image that haunts your mind. Leto is what all upcoming movies need, now more than ever.

Elise: Ledger’s Joker is an individual character and can run on his own but also he was specifically used for Harley Quinn’s back story. The audience is always focused on where the Joker is. Ledger keeps the viewers hooked from his first line to his last. Ledger terrifies and enthuses audiences while Leto simply interests.

Grace: Leto could have his own movie because he has enough mystery and intrigue. Harley is just another factor. The rainy and grimy Dark Knight trilogy is over for the Joker entirely, a different type of character is required. Leto has our generation all backing him up, ready to see him thrive as the Joker.

Elise: Ledger does not need a purple Lamborghini or long purple jacket to attract the audience. In “The Dark Knight,” Ledger is in an entire scene with a mask on before he reveals his face that sends shivers down viewer’s spines. Who can forget his brilliantly twisted line “Why so serious?”
