Boys varsity basketball team prepares for MSL conference win

Varsity basketball is 16-9 (7-2) in conference and looking to win the conference championship. With a crushing win over Dundee Crown by 30 points, the boys look forward to take down arch-rival Prospect.

With Prospect 13-9 (7-2) in conference, this was a giant game for both teams. Elk Grove was down about 12 at one point in this game, but they fought back and cut the lead down to 6 and that’s where it stayed for most of the game.

Near the end of the game, the Grens made a comeback to only be down by one point. With the game on the line and Joey Gatziolis staring down the hoop, time was winding down. He drove the lane, stopped and took a fading jump shot that missed the front of the rim. But they did not box out senior forward Fulton Wingba. So he got through the traffic and tipped the ball in with about 1 second to go as EG took the lead 51-50. The Nation went nuts! The court was stormed with time still on the clock, but order was eventually restored.

With one second left, Prospect took a last second heave that missed, giving EG the win. Now the Nation stormed the court celebrating the win with the players. Now EG is tied for the conference lead with Prospect.

The squad is now 10-2 throughout the last 12 games with big conference wins over Hersey, Buffalo Grove and now Prospect. They also have blown out multiple teams in this amazing winning streak.

With just one of the big individual games Tyree Howard had 25 points against Northridge Prep. Even with a lot of production from seniors, juniors Stefan Pantovic, Nico Collazo and Joe Lopez are coming up with big numbers during games.

With one conference game left these last couple of weeks are going to be critical for the team as the Grens look to win conference.
