It took over seven months for singer/songwriter Jake Bugg to release his self titled debut in the Land of Freedom.
Yes, seven long, long months.
His album was released in England in October 2012 and on April 9, American fans patiently waiting for this album got everything they ever wanted from this 19 year old singer. In fact, they got much, much more.
Beginning from track number one to track number 14, Bugg leaves you speechless.
He leaves you with goosebumps all over.
He makes you want to cry.
He makes you smile.
He slowly but surely makes a listener fall in love with him.
Jake Bugg makes you experience emotions that you never knew existed.
Jake Bugg made one great album.
The album is simple. The two main instruments are Bugg and his acoustic guitar. And then occasionally he throws in a soft drum part and an electric guitar. Either way, his album transitions from one song to another fairly well and with subtle melodies and lyrics this album might be the best album of 2013.
At least so far.
The very first single of this album “Lightning Bolt” starts the album on a very high note. Then its followed by the song “Two Fingers” which is about him leaving behind the town that he grew up in. Just listening to the first two songs, I fell deeply in love.
But the thing that makes this album so unique, so different from other artist are the songs that are slower paced. Songs like “Slide,” “Broken,” and “Someplace,” show Bugg’s softer side. It shows how vulnerable he could be.
Maybe those songs explain this: “I think music is about singing from the heart, being honest,” Bugg said to Rolling Stone magazine.
Anyways, while listening you can help but wonder if this album is going to get any better.
It does.
The third to last song, “Note To Self,” is just a reminder to anyone who has ever felt down or having a bad day. He sings “And write a note to yourself/ a note to yourself/ and don’t be cruel/ cos things happen/ and you know it’s not your fault.” Bugg reaches a part deep down in you and you cry. I cried and I smiled. This song is quite possibly the best song in the album.
Then as track number 14 ended. I was in awe and you can say that those 14 songs are the only thing I’ve been listening to. My other music is getting ignored because of Jake Bugg.
But the only reason why I’m writing this review is for the reader to decide to wether to purchase this album or not.
All I could say to that is yes. And if you don’t want to buy it, I’ll even let you borrow my copy.
