Appreciation and respect are some uncommon virtues we rarely see at our school. Yet it’s fair to say that there are arguments to say whether some people deserve it or not. But one thing is for sure: There is a group of people in our school who deserve the epitome of our respect and appreciation: he custodial and technical staff.
They are here everyday from early in the morning until very late at night. They are all dedicated to improving our days at EGHS. Why is it then that the student body treats such hardworking people with minimal amounts of respect?
Just last week there was a food fight in the cafeteria. In a span of minutes the floor was covered with lettuce. The students responsible for the act laughed it off and walked away, leaving the mess.
As they walked away, not caring who was to clean up their mess, a male custodian who had been watching took charge and cleaned all the lettuce off of the floor.
The students did not apologize. They did not say “thank you.” They merely ignored the man who quietly swept the floor. There is something wrong with that picture.
These members of our community are some of the nicest people in our school. Not only do they deal with the whole teenage high school situation throughout the day, but they do it with a smile. That definitely deserves respect.
It is fair to say that it is their job to clean up after our messes. But that does not mean we can treat them with that amount of disrespect. The least we can do is thank the staff for their continuous hard work.
The custodial staff is not the only group of people that deserve our high respect. The technical crew at EGHS also deserve recognition for all the work they do.
As students we are constantly frustrated at times that the computers or other technical devices at school do not work. I cannot say I am also innocent of this act, as there have been countless amount of times that I have done the same.
Yet we need to understand that these people are not perfect. Technology is finicky. It will not always work correctly and perfectly. Therefore we should not lose our tempers so quickly.
The custodial staff is devoted to maintaining the environment of our school clean. We all take the clean bathrooms and lunchrooms for granted.
The technical staff is devoted to maintaining the electronical devices at EGHS in running order. We all take the computers and other devices we use throughout the school day for granted.
So next time we decide to leave a spilt milk carton on the table or curse at the technical staff for not fixing the slowness of the Wi-Fi, let us all take a deep breath. Let us all show respect for these people and do what is consciously correct.
