On Feb. 10, The Black Keys were called up on stage to accept their four awards at the 55th Grammy Awards. Later that night, the drummer of the band, Patrick Carney, was swarmed by cameras and TMZ asked him a rather controversial question. The night that was supposed to be filled with happiness and excitement would quickly turn into a storm with a whole lot of thunder and non stop lightning.
TMZ asked Carney if he thought Justin Bieber got snubbed a Grammy. To that Carney responded: “He’s rich right? The Grammys are for music not for money.” Bieber responded the next day by tweeting “The Black Keys drummer should get slapped around haha.”
Carney and Bieber would be part of a so called twitter war. But there’s a twist, Bieber would not be fighting his own war. His fans would fight the war that he declared.
For the following week, Beliebers would tweet Carney rude and disrespectful things. They would call him ugly and ask him how he is famous since he is too old or that his band is garbage. This went on nonstop for a while.
Carney then got the idea to begin mocking Bieber’s fan. He changed his twitter name to Justin Bieber 2.0 and he kept tweeting that he had miraculously become the next Bieber and that he has a lot of, well, swag.
The cycle continued for a week Beliebers would tweet him and Carney would retaliate with a sassy response. Over time this Internet feud ended and this nonsense would be over.
Now, I’ve been a fan of The Black Keys for a long time. So when I found out they were nominated for not one but six Grammys (The Black Keys won four out of the six) I was super excited and I thought “No one deserves this more than The Black Keys.”
Anyways, Bieber might not be the greatest singer and his fan base are annoying but he should have not reacted the way he did. Tweeting that another artist should get ‘slapped around’ is not only weird but mean.
And yes, Carney did get carried away with his tweets as well. Maybe he shouldn’t have mocked Bieber’s fans but I can see how it’s hard not to. If you are getting cyber bullied your instant reaction is to say something back and that’s what he did. I’m pretty sure he never thought that this was going to escalate the way it did.
Therefore, someone’s opinion was taken too seriously and a problem emerged. Fans of The Black Keys and fans of Justin Bieber were virtually sending each other hate. Who would’ve thought that someone’s opinion could cause such a big problem?
Eventually, Carney stopped mocking all of Bieber’s fans but he didn’t apologize for what he said. Bieber never touched this topic again.
And I guess all I want to say is that if someone expresses their opinion, you shouldn’t be quick to judge. It is their own opinion. We all have them and we are entitled to. We all want to be heard. We all want to feel like we are right and everyone else is wrong. In the end, you are not right in someone else’s mind. You could be dead wrong.
So, the main idea of this article you are reading is simple, if someone states their personal opinion try not to take it too seriously. If you don’t agree with them just ignore it, don’t turn it into a problem that is not very important.
