On Aug. 29, principal Paul Kelly entered the journalism class full of enthusiasm. He was formerly division head of social science and world languages at John Hersey High School. The mutual communication of friends from Elk Grove High School and his hard work made him new principal of Elk Grove High School. It is a new school year with new people and new changes to come.
“I encourage students to be kind,” Kelly said.
Staff are looking forward to the fresh start that a new school year brings.There are new changes that Kelly wants to make this year: the big one is that the the “go home freshman” chant will be eliminated. Since freshman are new to the school, it is upperclassmen’s responsibility to make them feel comfortable and welcome them.
“Socialization is the way to go,” counselor Ruby Aleman said.
She is determined on giving suggestions for her students to get involved in activities, clubs and more specific details on college resources.
Fortunately, staff members have suggestions for changes this school year. Humanities and theater director Chuck Cavazos is excited to work with the new administration, getting to know the students and to find new ways to help them. Cavazos will be willing to help students as much as he can and.
“I like to work with students,” Cavazos said.
U.S History teacher Mindy Perkins wants the students to have a renewed enthusiasm while in class. She wants to start with a healthy routine this year. Most of the student in school specially freshman are using iPads, and Perkins in excited to learn about the new technology.
“After the long summer vacation I want students to be enthusiastic in school,” Perkins said.
Art teacher Cynthia Pacyk wants to focus on her new method of dividing students into groups and giving them as much time and support to explore and learn new things.
“Unity is the best,” Pacyk said.
New substitute teacher Lesley Nagle feels great with her new experience at EGHS. This year her first change will be following the plans, organizing materials and getting to know students better.
“For me, being organized is the key,” Nagle said.
“Student often offer cool ideas on new technology, so learning from them is one of the changes for me this year,” said ELL teacher Megan Conlon. This year, she wants to give more focus on the students and start socializing with them.
“ Fresh start for life is biggest part in the world,” Conlon said.
