At the start of the season, no one could have predicted the journey that was about to unfold for the girls flag football team.
After going 3-10 last year according to Maxpreps, the Grens this year have a perfect 14-0 record. They will play defending state champion Fremd in the Mid-Suburban League championship game Tuesday night at home.
To get to this point is, according to the team’s coaches and athletes, a testament to the hard work, determination and strong sense of unity the team has built.
“It’s always nice that they have those connections,” assistant coach Kevin Modelski said. “When they are connected and cohesive, they play really hard.”
Flag football at Elk Grove is only in its second year as a sport, which is the same amount of time that it’s been a recognized sport at the state level. In that short time, both players and coaches have had to adapt to new rules and regulations while simultaneously fostering team spirit.
For senior varsity player Camille Fouche, the team’s bond is key to their success.
“I like how we’re all close, and even if we’re not friends outside of school, when we have practice and games, we all come together,” she said.
While flag football may seem like just another sport, for senior Lindsay Bobowski, it has been a transformative experience.
“It’s made me a better leader,” she said. “I had to step up, and even though most of the other players had a year under their belt, I had to quickly step up and learn everything.”
As the season progresses, head coach Courtney Lindfors has set ambitious goals for the team.
“My goal is to win the MSL Championship and then make our way through the state series,” she said. “But I think it’s taking it one game at a time.”
Currently on a 14-game win streak, the team’s impressive record is a reflection of the dedication and effort they have put in each day.
“Putting in the time and effort shows that you can accomplish anything,” Lindfors said.
