Green Grens have major plans on improving environmental issues in the school and in the community.
Counselor and Green Grens adviser Steve Gordon and Green Gren members have some ideas in mind.
“Working on reducing garbage and improving the rate of recycling,” junior Olga Triantafilidis said.
One of the ideas is to gather statistics and place them in a mini-movie and broadcast it during morning announcements.
Gordon says that most of the items that can be recycled end up being contaminated with food. Therefore, they can not be recycled.
“Our two-year goal for EGHS is that, as a building, we are consistently recycling as much volume per week as we are throwing away,” Gordon said.
Gordon also hopes to change how people feel about recycling.
“Our hope is to change attitudes and behavior of EGHS students and staff regarding recycling in our building,” Gordon said.
In addition to the work inside of school, the Grens will also focus on organizing community-wide recycling drives of items that are not easy to recycle, such as, batteries, shoes and electronics.
Gordon adds: “It is also our intention to eventually have a screening of an environmental movie for the Elk Grove Village community.”
If anyone is searching for a new club to join Green Grens meet on the second and fourth Fridays of every month after school. New members are welcomed.
