There is a new club firing up at EG this year and anybody who loves
seeing plays, enjoys reading “Romeo & Juliet” and “Othello” in
English class, or who simply just wants to have fun, should join
Shakespeare Club.
“Everyone knows that I love taking my students to see plays,”
Shakespeare Club advisor and English teacher Rita Sayre said. “But there are so many students in other classes who want to go. So I decided to
start a club for that open to all EG students.”
Over the course of the school year, the group will see four plays at
the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. However, only two of these will be
Shakespeare plays.
The first play will be the musical “Sunday in the Park with George” on Oct. 24. Then, “School for Lies” on Dec. 11,“Julius Caesar” on Feb. 5 and “Romeo &
Juliet” on March 23. The group will still meet on most Thursdays to plan other activities.
The first meeting was Sept. 6 after school and in that one meeting
alone, a myriad of ideas for the year were spewing out of the
students, Just a few include: acting, Skyping with the directors of
the plays, learning Shakespearean insults and having a possible “Sonnet Slam.”
There is one idea, however, that appeals greatly to all the members: T-shirts.
“We want something on our t-shirts that indicates we’re both intellectual and cool,” Sayre said.
Dramatic and emotional plots are staples in Shakespeare’s works and
that really appeals to students.
“I love Shakespeare because the stories have a dramatic plot, but you
still get emotion from it,” senior Amelia Gazda said. “And that’s why
I joined.”
While it’s still early in the year, most students cannot wait for
what is ahead of them.
“I’m looking forward to so many things,” junior Suheoll Diaz said.
“But right now I’m looking forward to analyzing Shakespeare with Ms.
Sayre and seeing plays!”
