In the 1940s Anne Frank and her family went into hiding from the German army. This year’s annual fall play depicts “The Diary of Anne Frank,” directed by English teacher Chuck Cavazos and Miguel Sanchez. The show is being performed October 5-8 at 7 p.m. in the EG theater.

Senior Emily Franke is portraying the main role of Anne Frank. Franke explained how her fellow cast members have been preparing intensely to perfect their roles.

“There is a lot of information out there to use, and it’s really helped us all fine tune the details of the relationships of these characters,” Franke said.

Franke is reading Anne Frank’s diary and has watched a BBC interpretation of Anne’s story.

The cast has been rehearsing since the end of the summer. During the school year, they have rehearsals every day after school until around 6 p.m. In rehearsals the cast runs lines and sets props to perfect the final look and feel of the show.

Cavazos described rehearsal productivity and the way the cast stayed on task. “We have been meeting with different groups on different days to maximize our time,” Cavazos said. “I want each day to be a day that we accomplish something new.”

Last year EG performed “She Kills Monsters” which was inducted into the Illinois Theater Fest. Cavazos knew that after “She Kills Monsters,” he could do something very dramatic. He also knew that he potentially had the students that could pull it off.

The play this year takes on a dramatic and emotional stance.

Cavazos explained his reasoning for choosing “The Diary of Anne Frank”. “It is deeply personal because of my faith, but it is also a timeless story of faith in general, faith in all that is good in us, even at the darkest moments.”

The meaning of the story hits home with Cavazos. He states, “I do believe that our audience will be moved by what they see on stage.”

Instead of having prerecorded music, a special live performance by Chamber Orchestra will be displayed during the first dance of the show. The intent is to add a realistic feeling that thoroughly invokes the audience into the show.
