DECA has begun with a bang.
On Nov. 22, the students in DECA had their first meet at Forest View Educational Center between all district 214 schools. The students competed in an economics test and promotions roleplays hoping to place among the other schools. The results of the first meet showed a promising future for the students of DECA, with senior Esmeralda Silva winning first in her event, Connor Cloherty winning first in his event and Leila Mitchel winning second in her event.
“I didn’t expect to place,” freshman Connor Cloherty said, “I was pretty nervous, but I got to talk to everyone and that made it better.”
Cloherty, the only freshman on DECA, placed first overall in his promotions roleplay. His achievement is not the only one to be celebrated. Senior Esmeralda Silva also placed first in her promotions roleplay.
“Since this was my first event ever, I just wanted to do well,” Silva said “I wasn’t really expecting anything because it was with everyone in the district, but I was really surprised and happy with the results.”
Doing well is always a goal, and it is evident that the students in DECA have done well by placing, and even just demonstrating their knowledge, but practice always helps
“My econ test is definitely a place where I could improve,” Cloherty said, “But then again there’s always room for improvement.”
The next meet will be on Dec 12 at the Rosemont Convention Center against 16 different schools. As students prepare and practice for the next meet, everyone on DECA continues to learn from each other and use teamwork to help each other do well.
“They are instilled with leadership and human relation skills, because everything we do involves working together as a team in the world of work,” Co-Advisor Chad Froeschle said.
