Although not physically demanding as many activities offered at EGHS, chess is highly competitive and mentally demanding.
This year, because the chess team is new, their record has been 2-7, winning their last meet of the season
“For a young team we have been doing okay,” said coach Peter Wang. “Five of eight individuals in the starting line up are new this year and our seniors have done well,”
During the meets the team play on eight boards, Board 1 being the most amount of points and Board 8 with the least amount of points.
Individually, senior Alex Nicoara has a record of 4-4-1 on Board 1. Senior Adam McDonough is 6-3 on Board 2.
“I think our team has become a lot stronger as a whole, we currently have a lot of growing to do, but I feel that our main accomplishment this year was ensuring a consistently more successful chess team in the future,” McDonough said.
With MSL conference on Jan. 28 and the state meets on Feb. 8 and 9, the team continues to prepare themselves against the tough competition.
They not only practice every week against different members of the team, honing their skills, but they also use online resources such as chess.com to practice on their own time.
“We look forward to performing well at the state, especially our seniors. But overall we look forward to improve and develop as a team,” Wang said.
